Black Agate and Black Onyx are both fibrous Chalcedony and belong to the quartz family. They are the same! The difference lies in that Onyx is of a higher density than that of Agate.
When buying jewellery in bead form, you are buying what I regard as Agate. Conversely, whey buying a cut stone, sold by carat weight, I would classify that as an Onyx. It all comes down to quality!
